2020 - An Extraordinary Year For All
In 2020, the outbreak of Covid-19 took over much of daily lives and activities. In light of this, the Foundation was able to identify only one program to support. With the Foundation matching the funding provided by the Federal Government of Canada, a STEAM Robotics and Coding program was launched at the Mississippi Mills Library (Almonte Branch) in November.
The Foundation did seek additional ways to support the community and decided to give signification donations to the Lanark County Food Bank and Lanark Interval House. A virtual Annual General Meeting of the Foundation was held recently. The newly constituted Board will be meeting early in the new year and looks forward to opportunities to partner in funding programs for literacy and learning as we all move forward together in 2021. |
The new STEAM robotics and coding program at the Mississippi Mills Public LibraryThe new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programming initiative was launched in September. This program allows youth in the community to explore circuity, computer programming and mechanical engineering in challenging, creative and fun ways.
The goal of the program is to inspire youth to pursue STEAM knowledge and engage their innovative spirit to create throughout their lives. The program gives hands-on experience. Participants learn by doing and are encouraged to think 'outside the box'. Participants are challenged to build a 'fastest' robot, a most 'precise' robot where quality wins out over speed, learn of gear ratios, have their robots complete mazes and compete in a Da Vinci challenge where the functionality and beauty of the work are both important. The Lego Robotics workshops are very popular - registration is full and feedback is very positive.
